Abstract

With the tightening of air pollution control standards, the implementation of processes with high pollutant removal efficiency in flue gas treatment at sintering plants has become increasingly widespread. An important example of this technology is the MEROS flue gas purification system commissioned in 2018 at Kardemir Karabük Iron and Steel Industry and Trade Inc. This system ensures the effective capture of pollutants in the flue gas under high-temperature and dry conditions using sodium bicarbonate. However, as a result of this process, fine particulate waste classified as hazardous is generated, containing heavy metals and various inorganic compounds. The disposal of such waste is generally carried out through appropriate stabilization/solidification processes followed by safe landfilling. Nevertheless, due to high disposal and transportation costs and environmental impacts, the development of alternative recovery methods has become necessary. In this study, the chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the flue dust waste generated by the MEROS process were determined, and the heavy metal contents and potential environmental risks were evaluated. In addition, the presence of commercially valuable compounds within the waste was identified and assessed from an economic perspective.
