Abstract
This work aims at examining the discussions between President Venizelos and King Constantine during the Gallipoli Campaign which constitues one of the most active period of the Greek domestic politics. Greece could enter the Great War, following three years of intensive and turbulent process. The main reason for this “detention” was the disagreement between Venizelos who followed a policy to participate the war with the Allies and Constantine who insisted on Greece’s neutrality. Owing to this Greece failed to adopt a “national” policy. Following the outbreak of the war Venizelos endeavored to enter the war on the side of the Allies. According to Venizelos the war would result with definite victory of the Allies and choosing this path will not merely protect Greece from the Ottoman and Bulgarian “threat” but also Greece will get the opportunity to double its land, achieve Megali İdea, “the great and national dream” and create “Greater Greece”. However the King Constantine, who also desired the same goal, believed that the war would end with Germany’s victory and opposed this policy. According to Constantine Greece had to stay neutral for the sake of its “national security and interests”. The quarrel between the two became clearer at the end of 1914 and reached its climax at the beginning of 1915 when the Allies invited Greece to be part of the Gallipoli Campaign. Despite all his attempts, in this process, Venizelos failed to convince the King to enter the war. Thereupon, Greek politics and the public opinion divided and a process called “national schism” began. This work aims at examining and discussing this period, which is also considered one of the most significant factors of the “Asia Minor Disaster”, through the disagreements between Venizelos and Constantine. Besides, because the main elements of the discussions was the Ottoman Empire, it is also of importance in terms of Turkey. Aiming at dealing with the thesis of the parties with all its dimensions this work also reveals how Greece was prepared the process of 1919-1922.
