Abstract

Adaptive reuse is widely employed as a conservation strategy for underutilized historic buildings; however, its success depends on the compatibility between the spatial characteristics of the existing structure and the requirements of the new function. Among adaptive reuse options, museums are frequently preferred due to their potential to both preserve and represent cultural heritage. Yet, integrating museum functions into historic buildings often generates spatial, functional, and interpretive tensions, particularly when the architectural configuration and symbolic layers are not adequately considered. In Turkey, the 1923 Population Exchange between Greece and Turkey resulted in the abandonment or transformation of numerous settlements formerly inhabited by Orthodox Greek communities. Many historic buildings, especially churches, have been repurposed as “exchange-themed” museums. While this practice contributes to the preservation of built heritage, it also raises critical questions regarding the compatibility of museum functions with spatial organization, ritual memory, and cultural significance of these structures. This study examines the adaptive reuse of the Yeşilburç Church Mosque in Niğde as a Population Exchange Museum, evaluating its spatial and functional performance within the framework of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) 2022 museum definition. The building, originally constructed as a Greek Orthodox church and later converted into a mosque, embodies multiple historical layers, making it a critical case for assessing the interaction between architectural heritage and contemporary museum practices. The research adopts a qualitative methodology combining on-site observation, spatial analysis, and content analysis of the exhibition layout. The assessment is structured around key criteria derived from the ICOM definition, including research, education, diversity, sustainability, and professional management. This framework enables a comprehensive evaluation of both the spatial configuration of the building and the institutional capacity of the museum. The findings reveal that the current museum function does not fully align with the spatial organization of the historic structure. Display units placed between structural columns fragment the interior space, disrupting spatial continuity and limiting access to certain areas, particularly those associated with the building’s later ritual use as a mosque. This spatial fragmentation weakens the legibility of the building’s layered history and diminishes the overall visitor experience. The museum also exhibits shortcomings in relation to contemporary museological principles. It lacks a systematic research program, structured educational activities, and participatory engagement mechanisms. The collection is limited in scope and not supported by a clearly defined acquisition strategy. Furthermore, professional management, communication strategies, and long-term sustainability planning remain insufficient. In response to these findings, the study proposes an alternative model that reconsiders museum spatial organization beyond a single building. Rather than concentrating all functions within the Yeşilburç Church Mosque, the approach distributes them across the settlement. The church-mosque is retained as the primary narrative space, while the bathhouse and traditional houses are assigned complementary functions such as exhibitions, education, workshops, and visitor services. This distributed model reduces pressure on the main structure and preserves its spatial and symbolic integrity. It also enables a more flexible museum program aligned with contemporary museological principles and extends the heritage experience across the settlement. The study concludes that single-building adaptive reuse strategies are often insufficient for contemporary museum needs. A settlement-scale approach integrating multiple structures offers a more sustainable and context-sensitive alternative.
