Abstract

For Russia, which faced significant political and economic crises in the post-Cold War era, the 1990s were characterized by a foreign policy oriented toward rapprochement with the West. However, from the late 1990s onward, this policy, which prioritized integration with Western institutions and the free-market economy, gradually evolved first into a more balanced approach and later into a Eurasian-oriented foreign policy. The first decade of the 2000s was marked by Moscow’s efforts to define its relationship with NATO, while geopolitical competition in the post-Soviet space contributed to the rapid deterioration of relations between Russia and the West. The 2008 conflict in Georgia and the subsequent Crimea crisis in 2014 further deepened this divide, leading to a profound rupture between Russia and the Western world. As Moscow became increasingly subject to political and economic sanctions, Asia acquired strategic significance in Russian foreign policy. Edited by Anatoly Torkunov, Dmitry Streltsov, and Ekaterina Koldunova, “The Asian Turn in Russian Foreign Policy” is a comprehensive volume that examines this transformation through its historical, geopolitical, economic, and regional dimensions. The book is organized into three main sections focusing on East Asia; Southeast Asia and ASEAN-centred multilateral institutions; and South Asia and the Middle East. Across a total of twenty chapters, it offers a multidimensional analysis of Russia’s turn toward Asia and stands out as an important reference work for future studies on Russian foreign policy.
