Abstract

In theological studies, the distinction between “sacred space” and “profane/secular space” occupies a central position. This study demonstrates how this distinction has become increasingly blurred in the contemporary era. While Christianity in Europe has gradually lost much of its institutional and dogmatic structure, it has also sought to gain visibility through a “post secular” identity by taking on an experiential and cultural form through festivals and music. This process should be understood as a transformation (metamorphosis) of religion. The research examines the manifestations of individual religiosity emerging within the Religious Music context of secularism in Europe through religious music festivals organized in several European countries, including De Passie, Big Church Festival, Greenbelt Festival, Christmas Rock Night, and Maata Näkyvissä. As institutional religion has begun to decline in Europe, increasing tendencies toward individualism and spirituality have paved the way for forms of religiosity centered more on spirituality and experience. As a result of this transformation, new understandings of religiosity have emerged, and religious music has begun to gain visibility in the public sphere in different ways. The aim of this study is to analyze the transformation of religious music in Europe within the frameworks of secularism and post secularism through church music festivals that are examined within the scope of the research and integrated with popular culture. In this context, the study examines the literature related to church music festivals organized in various European countries, official organizational sources, websites, and digital visual recordings. The findings suggest that although the public visibility of religion in Europe has weakened under the influence of secularism, religious elements in the festival examples examined within the scope of the study appear to seek renewed visibility through various cultural and artistic activities. Therefore, the study aims to contribute to the literature by addressing religious music festivals within a post secular framework and offers an interdisciplinary perspective in the contexts of theology, musicology, and sociology.
