Abstract

The Turkish economy has entered a process of globalization and liberalization since 1980. Firstly, international goods movements were liberalized and capital movements were liberalized as of 1989. In this framework, the financial fragility of the Turkish economy increased and a structure open to financial crises emerged. Export-led growth model was adopted as the growth model. This study analyzes the relationship between GDP per capita, inflation rate, foreign trade deficit and portfolio investments in Turkey. The data range of the study is 1991-2022. Hatemi-J cointegration test and FMOLS methods were applied in the study. According to the results obtained from the study, inflation has a negative effect on GDP per capita and foreign trade deficit has a positive effect. GDP per capita has a negative effect on inflation rate, while foreign trade deficit and portfolio investments have a positive effect. The effect of GDP per capita and inflation on foreign trade deficit is positive. The effect of inflation on portfolio investments is found to be positive.
