Abstract
In this study, the effect of basalt fiber particle (BFP) reinforcement on the mechanical properties of polymers produced by three-dimensional Stereolithography (SLA) was investigated. Five samples for unreinforced and reinforced different ratios of BFP (0.5%, 1%, and 2%) were manufactured, and their mechanical properties were evaluated through tensile tests, toughness calculations, and hardness tests. The tensile test results revealed that the samples reinforced with 1% BFP exhibited the highest tensile strength, with an increase of 45.8%. In contrast, samples with 0.5% reinforcement showed a slight increase in tensile strength (4.3%) compared to the reference (unreinforced) samples. Samples with 2% BFP reinforcement demonstrated the lowest tensile strength. Toughness tests indicated that at 0.5% and 1% BFP reinforcement, the particles were relatively well-dispersed in the matrix and therefore positively affected the energy absorption capacity. However, at 2% BFP reinforcement, particle agglomeration and inhomogeneous distribution led to a reduction in toughness. Hardness test results showed that the hardness of the samples generally increased with the reinforcement amount. Interestingly, although samples with 2% BFP reinforcement had higher hardness values than unreinforced samples, they exhibited lower hardness compared to samples with 1% reinforcement. The results of Archimedes density tests showed a fill rate of 99%, suggesting that the fill amount did not have a significant impact on mechanical properties. In conclusion, BFP reinforcement significantly improved the mechanical properties of polymers produced by SLA, particularly enhancing tensile strength and hardness. However, the homogeneous distribution of particles is critical for improving mechanical properties. The high fill rate and minimal internal voids demonstrate the reliability and consistency of the mechanical performance of SLA-produced parts.
