Abstract
This study examines the causal relationships between exports and key macroeconomic variables affecting exports in the Turkish economy within the framework of the Toda-Yamamoto approach. Using annual data for the period 1991–2024, the effects of economic growth, inflation, interest rates, and exchange rates on exports were analyzed. The study tested the stationarity properties of the series using the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) and Phillips-Perron (PP) tests, determined the appropriate lag length using information criteria, and then applied the Toda-Yamamoto causality test. The findings reveal that exports unidirectionally drive economic growth, while growth does not create a significant causal relationship with exports. This result supports the “export-led growth hypothesis” for Trükiye. Furthermore, bidirectional causal relationships were identified between exports and inflation, interest rates, and exchange rates. These findings demonstrate that exports are not only a determinant of growth but also of price stability, financial costs, and foreign exchange markets. The study makes a unique contribution to the literature by demonstrating the interdependence of exports with macroeconomic indicators in Türkiye. From a policy perspective, ensuring macroeconomic stability, developing financial instruments to counter exchange rate fluctuations, and increasing the structural diversity of exports are crucial for export sustainability. Consequently, while exports are a leading driver of growth in Türkiye, they interact with inflation, interest rates, and exchange rates, highlighting the need for holistic and coordinated strategies for policymakers
