Abstract

It is crucial for parents to fulfill their responsibilities during the educational process in order to help children with special needs develop life skills and maximize their potential. Thus, this study aims to explore the perspectives of special education teachers working in primary schools on the educational responsibilities of parents of children with special needs. This research, conducted using the qualitative research method, employed a case study design. The study group consisted of 21 special education teachers working in primary schools in Adana during the 2023-2024 academic year. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a structured interview form. The obtained data were analyzed using a descriptive method and presented with direct quotations from the teachers' views. As a result of the research, teachers stated that the most fulfilled responsibility by parents of children with special needs is "ensuring the child's attendance at school," while the most neglected responsibility is "supporting the child's education at home." The most frequently mentioned reason for parents not fulfilling their responsibilities was "lack of awareness." Teachers mostly suggested "providing guidance services and informative family education," "psychological support," "individual meetings," "economic support to the family," and "increasing child-family activities" to ensure that parents fulfill their responsibilities.
