Abstract

The study aims to develop a valid and reliable scale to determine the self-efficacy of secondary school students regarding experimental studies. A sequential exploratory design was used in the research. Qualitative data were collected using documents. In this context, participant opinions were collected under the categories of pre-experiment, during-experiment and post-experiment. As a result of the analysis of the qualitative data obtained, a draft form consisting of 43 items was created. The number of items was reduced to 34 as a result of expert evaluations. The draft scale was applied to 719 secondary school students. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyzes were conducted to ensure the construct validity of the scale. As a result of factor analysis, it was determined that the scale consisted of 30 items and a single factor. The factor structure obtained as a result of confirmatory factor analysis was confirmed (χ2/df = 2.63, RMSEA = .048, GFI = .91, CFI = .98, NFI = .97, NNFI = .98). After validity analyses, reliability analyzes were conducted. In this context, the Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient was calculated as .935 for the overall scale. As a result of the analyses, it was interpreted that the scale was valid and reliable. There may be different variables (e.g. attitude, anxiety, academic achievement) that affect self-efficacy regarding the experiment. Therefore, it is recommended to examine the relationship between self-efficacy and these variables.
