Özet
Turizm bir ülke ekonomisi için gelir ve istihdam yaratıcı bir sektör olarak görülmektedir. İstihdama katkı sağladığı alanlar yalnızca turizm sektörüyle sınırlı kalmamakta, tarım, iletişim, sağlık ve eğitim sektörü gibi alanları da kapsamaktadır. Ayrıca ileri-geri bağlantıları olan bir sektördür. Bir yandan ülkenin altyapısının gelişmesini sağlarken, diğer yandan yabancı ziyaretçilerle vatandaşlar arasında kültürel bir etkileşim fırsatını da doğurmaktadır. Bahsedilen özellikleriyle turizm sektörü literatürde ekonomik büyümeye katkı sağlayacak bir alternatif olarak düşünülmektedir. Bu çalışmanın konusu Türkiye ekonomisinin kuruluşundan günümüze kadar geçen süre zarfında turizm sektörünün tarihsel gelişimi ve sektörün ekonomik büyümeye olan katkısını araştırmaktır. Bu amaçla ulaşılabilen en geniş veri setini kapsayacak şekilde 1963-2022 dönemi için Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu (TÜİK) ve Dünya Bankası resmi sitelerinden elde edilen veriler kullanılarak ARDL analizi aracılığıyla sektörün ekonomik büyümeyle ilişkisi ortaya konmaya çalışılmıştır. Yapılan analizler sonucunda literatürü destekleyecek şekilde uzun dönemde ekonomik büyüme ve turizm gelirleri arasında pozitif ve istatistiki olarak anlamlı bir ilişki tespit edilmiştir.
Abstract
Tourism is seen as an income and employment generating sector for an economy. The areas where it contributes to employment are not limited to the tourism sector only, but also include areas such as agriculture, communication, health and education sectors. It is also a sector with back and forth connections. While it ensures the development of the country's infrastructure, it also creates the opportunity for cultural interaction between foreign visitors and citizens. With the mentioned features, the tourism sector is considered in the literature as an alternative that will contribute to economic growth. The subject of this study is to investigate the historical development of the tourism sector and the contribution of the sector to economic growth from the establishment of the Turkish economy to the present day. For this purpose, the relationship between the sector and economic growth has been tried to be revealed through ARDL analysis, using data obtained from the official sites of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) and the World Bank for the period 1963-2022, covering the widest data set available. As a result of the analyses, a positive and statistically significant relationship was determined between economic growth and tourism revenues in the long term, supporting the literature.
