Abstract

The aim of this article is to address the viewpoint of Turkey’s local governments on sculpture and to draw attention to misapplications on the subject. In addition to the ugliness created by the gigantic symbols of local products placed in almost all our cities by municipalities in recent years, it also contradicts the natural and architectural texture of our cities. In order to show the historical process that has passed through this stage, the article begins with the importance given to the art of sculpture in the founding years of the Republic of Turkey. State facilities allocated to sculpture education and its practices since the first years of the Republic are briefly explained in the “Introduction” section, and then the damaged culture–art policies in the 1950s are mentioned. The problems of the stone sculpture symposiums organized by the municipalities are also mentioned, and the problem of kitsch representation objects placed in city and town squares is discussed. The measures that can be taken to solve the problem of anonymity created by the sculpture practices in our cities and some topics that can be discussed are presented as suggestions in the last section.
