Abstract
This study examines the effects of brain-based learning approach on the achievement, and retention of knowledge of third grade students in social studies course. A half experimental design based on unsynchronized model with a control group was used in the study. The sample of the research consisted of a total of 128 third grade primary school students, 67 in the experimental group and 61 in the control group. The research was applied within the context of attainments of science in the “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow” theme of Social Studies course. The students in the experimental group were taught through brain-based learning approach and the students in control group were taught through traditional teaching methods. The courses were taught by the researcher in 72 hours of class. Before and after experimental processes, achievement test, attitude scale and critical thinking scale were applied to the students to collect data. The data obtained were analyzed through SPSS program. Independent sample t-test were used for data analysis. In the results of the analysis, a significant difference was found between the achievement posttest scores of experimental and control groups in favor of the experimental group. A significant difference was found between the achievement retention posttest scores of experimental and control groups in favor of the experimental group.
