Abstract
Objective This study aims to compare the growth and development of obese and normal weight individuals in terms of craniofacial development, dental age and cervical vertebral maturation (CVM). Material and Method Among the patients aged 12-16 who applied to the clinic for orthodontic treatment, 51 obese (31 female, 20 male) patients with a body mass index at or above the 95th percentile and 52 normal weight (32 female, 20 male) patients between the 16th and 85th percentile were included in the study. The craniofacial development, cervical vertebral maturation and dental age of the individuals were evaluated from the cephalometric and panoramic radiographs taken at the beginning of the treatment. Since parametric assumptions were not provided, the Mann-Whitney U test was used for comparison between groups. Results The mean values of female patients’ SNA, SNB, Y-Axis angle and Pm-A showed statistically significant differences between the groups (p0.05). Conclusion Craniofacial morphology shows some differences between obese and normal weight adolescents. Orthodontists should consider craniofacial morphology and dental development characteristics when planning treatment in obese individuals.
