Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate serum level of zinc and lead in patients with and without retinal vein occlusion, and reveal to between association of these elements and pathophysiology of retinal vein occlusion Material and methods: In the study, 26 patients with retinal vein occlusion and 26 healthy controls were included at the visiting Gaziosmanpaşa University Eye Clinic. Amounts of lead and zinc in blood serum samples was measured using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (Perkin Elmer Analyst A 700). Results: The mean age was 62.4±6.1 years for patients groups and 63.5±5.9 years for the control groups (p=0.509). There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of diabetes (p = 0.782). Hypertension was significantly higher in retinal vein occlusion groups than the control group. (respectively, 76.9% and 46.4%, p=0.024). Serum levels of zinc in the patient group and control group was 12.48 ± 0.82 µmol/l and 12.57±0.61 µmol/l, respectively (p = 0.634). Serum levels of lead in patients and control group was 18.07 ± 1.29 µmol/l and 0.03±0.37 µmol/l, respectively (p=0.001). Conclusion: Serum levels of lead in the patients with retinal vein occlusion were higher. These trace element in the pathogenesis of this disease, which is increased by increasing oxidative stress may play an important role.
