Abstract

Cyprus Island, which is under the rule of Ottomans for a long time, is a part of Turkey in terms of historical, cultural and geographical aspects. After the Cyprus is to British control in 1878, the Greek Cypriots had various initiatives for dreams of Enosis and many bloody events have occurred in Cyprus since the 1950s. With the military intervention of Turkey in 1974, Cyprus was seperated into two and in the north of the island was established an independent Northern Cyprus Turkish Republic (NCTR). With the intervention of Turkey, a two –state and two community structure and legally emerged in Cyprus as well as Greek Cyrpiot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC), where Greek Cypriots lived, entered into a new process as EU member representin the whole of the island in 2004. The Cyprus Issue has become more comlicated because EU confirm membership of Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus representing the whole of the island. Subsequently, the discovery of significant amounts of oil and gas deposists in the Eastern Mediterranean has made Cyprus an object of global enegery policy that is shpaed beyond the traditional Cyprus issue. In the new conjuncture, balances in Cyprus and the right Mediterranean have begun to reshape in the direction of the sharing of energy resources. In this descriptive study prepared by surveying method, probable effects of the energy resources discovered in Eastern Mediterranean on the Cyprus problem were discussed.
