While bath machines were invented in order to benefit frommarine culture in Europe in the early 18th century, a different marine culture began todevelop in the Ottoman Empire. These baths, also known as deniz banyosu, deryahamamı or derya banyosu, have been in the foreground as an entertainment and restingplace especially for the people of Istanbul.Seabaths, especially in terms of its services, madeits mark on the 19th century. Thesebusinesses, which have a significant place in the 19th century, have succeeded inmaintaining their function until the last period of the 20th century. They became amodern enterprise, especially after passing under the control of the municipality inIstanbul and a significant progress has been made in the profit margin. Seabaths wereestablished in İstanbul and other coastal cities as well as in the cities by the rivers whichare used for swimming. It was seen that these baths were also been built together withhot springs to take advantage of spawater. While the number of these baths werearound 20 in their first years, they rapidly increased to over 80.These bathes were open during the summer season and continued to exist by selling foodand beverages in the winter months.
