Özet

Medeniyet, ‘medenilik’ ve ‘medenileşme süreci’ gibi kavramlarla birlikte kullanılarak, toplumların ulaşması gereken, tekil bir olgu olarak sunulmaktadır. Bunun birtakım toplumsal etkilerinin olması kaçınılmaz bir gerçektir. Bu etkiyi Osmanlı modernleşme hareketine baktığımızda da görmek mümkündür. Bu etkinin görüldüğü en önemli kişilerden biri de Ahmet Cevdet Paşa’dır. Bu noktada Ahmet Cevdet Paşa’nın görüşlerini anlamak Osmanlı modernleşmesi ve medeniyet ilişkisini anlamamıza yardımcı olacaktır. Bu çalışmada Ahmet Cevdet Paşa’nın Osmanlı modernleşmesi içindeki yeri onun medeniyet anlayışı çerçevesinde incelenecektir. Böylece medeniyetin ulaşılması gereken bir idealden ziyade sosyal bir vaka olduğu ve medeniyetin tekil bir olgudan ziyade, etkileşim halinde gelişerek ilerleyen ve milletler veya coğrafyalar arasında geçişkenlik gösterebilen bir süreç olduğu anlatılmaya çalışılacaktır.

Abstract

Civilization is presented as a singular phenomenon that the societies should reach by using the concepts of ‘‘civilization’’ and the ‘‘process of civilizing’’. It is an inevitable fact that this would have some social effects. It is also possible to see this effect in the Ottoman modernization movement. The reflection of this movement can be best seen in Ahmet Cevdet Pasha’s works. At this point; understanding the opinions of Ahmet Cevdet Pasha will help us to understand the relationship between Ottoman modernization and the civilization. In this work; the importance of Ahmet Cevdet Pasha within the Ottoman Modernization in the context of his understanding of modernization will be analyzed. As a result; we will try to explain that the civilization is a social case but not an ideal that should be reached and not a singular phenomenon but rather a process which is transitive and interaction with other nations and geographies.
