Abstract

Mesopotamia is the region that covers the fertile lands between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers that hosted many civilizations throughout history, the Zagros Mountains in the east, the Lebanon Mountains in the west, Palestine, the Taurus Mountains in the north and the Persian Gulf in the south. This geography, which hosted the history of humanity and science, undoubtedly had an important accumulation in the field of medicine. The owners of the first written sources, the Sumerians, formed the beginning of our study as history. In addition, civilizations such as Akkad, Assyria, Babylon, and Elam constituted the scope of our study. The cuneiform works found in the Ashurbanipal Library of the Neo-Assyrian Period are of special importance by summarizing ancient Mesopotamian medicine. In this study, cuneiform documents related to Mesopotamian medicine and scientific documents related to the subject were evaluated according to today's infectious diseases branch. Ancient Mesopotamian cuneiform texts on the subject of soft tissue infection (cellulitis), malaria, rabies, leprosy and tuberculosis from infectious diseases were evaluated in terms of today's medical literature and understanding of medicine. The traces of the Ancient Mesopotamian medicine and health understandings of the diseases included in the study area were traced. Even in these exemplary diseases, concepts such as magic, magic, and spirit related to Mesopotamian medicine can be frequently encountered in texts. However, among these, it will be seen that they recognize today's diseases on the basis of symptoms, based on very detailed observations and in an effort to indicate prognosis. In this study, an evaluation will be made about soft tissue infections, malaria, rabies, leprosy and tuberculosis belonging to the infectious diseases branch.
