Abstract

There have been a number of studies about people changing their religion both from Islam to Christianity and from Christianity to Islam in the political environment that appeared during the Crusades and the following period. Regardless of religious truths, this condition indicates a new period in which culture and civilazation seen as "enemy" and thus approached from a different perspective by the two communities. Kilij Arslan II was one of the most important figure of that period. The statements in the Latin letter named Instructio Fidei Catholicae (Doktrine of Catholic Faith) which was sent to Sultan Kilij Arslan II by Papacy indicates that the Sultan wanted to accept Christianity as his religion by sending a letter to Papacy even before. In spite of existence of this answering letter sent by Papacy to Kilij Arslan II, there is no any mention of the Kilij Arslan II’ text regarding Papacy’s letters. In fact, it is impossible the fallow it’s trace. Although there has been many comments and evaluations regarding Sultan Kilij Arslan’s adoption of Christianity, it seems that, almost all of these comments and evaluations have been shaped under the shadow of the statements in the Papacies letter. Nevertheless, it is still interesting that the issue related to Kilij Arslan II’s adoption of Christianity is mentioned in the context of his relations with the German Empreror Frederik Barborossa. The existence of a common theme in this relationship, developed independent of Papacy, between the Sultan and Frederik makes the issue more complicated in terms of whether Kilij Arslan II sent the letter to Papacy or not. In this study, the document in question which has not been focused on sufficiently will be handled and, in this context, whether Kilij Arslan II had a relation with Papacy or not will be discussed. And, if he had such a relationship with Papacy, the impact of this relationship on his intention to accept Christianity will also be questioned.
