Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate/model the correlation between cigarette addiction of individuals and government policies to fight against their tobacco consumptions, and make recommendations to researchers and decision-makers with the findings of this study. In addition to the data collected with a survey in Zonguldak, cigarette addiction severity index is calculated for each individual via TOPSIS techniques in three different scenarios. The differentiations of factor scores with respect to subgroups of respondents are evaluated via statistical tests. According to correlation/regression analysis, there appears to be a correlation between taxes on cigarettes and other methods of government to fight against smoking and individuals’ cigarette addiction. Moreover, the tax on cigarettes and other methods of government to fight against smoking have an important effect on the level of cigarette addiction, along with gender, age, education level, purchase power of the consumer.
