Abstract

The term Middle Ages covers the thousand-year period from the fifth to the fifteenth century. Following the occupation of the Western Roman Empire by Germanic tribes there was a void of authority in the Latin part of the West. As a natural consequence of this, feudalism emerged and political authority was parceled. Senators operated the territory they received within the county, from the duke, or as a fief contract from the king, on the condition that they fulfilled certain responsibilities. Vassals, on the other hand, were serfs that ran the territories to which they were entrusted. This territorial system made each senor a local power over the lands under his sovereignty. Throughout the Middle Ages, the Church's political attitude was influential at different levels. The church was had not been involved in political affairs during the pagan period of the Roman Empire and was interested in its inner workings. Upon completion of institutionalization, he became an authority and began to intervene in the political arena. At the beginning of the Middle Ages, the Church adopted spiritual and secular authority as two independent powers, each having authority in their own fields. After five centuries, the understanding that spiritual authority was superior to the political authority began to prevail. Thinkers of the patristic period made important contributions to the formation and development of this understanding. These scholastic thinkers also acted on the understanding of dual authority and based their views on the opinions theological arguments. While the first thinkers of the scholastic period stated that the spiritual authority should be superior, the later thinkers at that time emphasized both the superiority of political authority and the will of the people.
