Abstract

The second half of the nineteenth century witnessed an increase in the connections of Iranians with the West. Many of them were passionate because of the development and progress of Western civilization and were introduced to the concepts that emerged in Europe in the Renaissance and Enlightenment and among them is the concept of nationalism and the superiority of the race of the Aryans and identity. They were also acquainted with what Orientalists wrote about Arabs and Islam. The Iranian Enlightenment, which recognized the vast separation of the Islamic East from the West, adopted most of these views. One of the first of these enlightenment writers and thinkers was Fatali Akhundzadeh who was stunned at the level the western civilization reached, and on the other hand, the backwardness Muslims suffered, including Iranian people. He sought for the reasons of this backwardness and ascertained that the reason behind it was the Arabic Alphabet. Later, he came to the conclusion that Islam and its message holders -Arabs- were the main reason for the backwardness and degradation of his country assailing them with ultimate insults and bitter accusations, while portraying Iran in the pre-Islamic era as a "golden age", thus established a new Shuubism trend and theorised the concept of Iranian nationalism that based on of Aryan race, looking back for pre-Islamic era and westernized Iran. It is no exaggeration to say that the image of Arabs drawn in the works of writers who came after him, was influenced by his thoughts. The researcher in the writings of Mirza Aga Khan Kirmani, Sadeq Hedayat, Sadeq Chubak, Nader Pour and Akhavan Sales, and others, notes that they redrew his image of Arabs and in a new projection and style. In addition to the enlightenment writers and thinkers, it is noteworthy that the image a huge number of Iranians have about Arabs today has been reflected in his works with much elaboration. After the introduction, the study deals with the life and importance of the writer, reviews his ideas, and then discusses the image of Arabs in his writings.
