Abstract

In this study with the information obtained from both survey and excavations one of the border towns in the eastern region of Lydia by the Menderes River, Apollonia/Tripolis, is evaluated. Traces of life in and around the city date from 3500 B.C. Construction as a polis with a grid street plan began in the Hellenistic period. During the Roman period Tripolis was similar in terms of urban planning and architectural structures to neighboring cities such as: Hierapolis, Laodikiea and Blaundos. The most striking result from this research was the traces of the devastating impact that the Sassanians had at Tripolis, as was also the ncase in cities such as: Aphrodisias, Sardeis and Ephesus. Despite trace remains of life, the city gradually ceased to exist from the third quarter of 7th century A.D. Some recovered archaeological material indicates a population inhabited this place in the 10th-11th centuries A.D. On the summit of the hill of Tripolis, the castle constructed by order of John Ducas Vatatsez III king of İznik in the 13th century, provides important data for Medieval archaeology.
