Abstract

Tyana is a mound settlemenet in the vicinity of Bor District in Niğde Porovince, upon whichKemerhisar Town is established nowadays. The historical resources and architectural monumentsthat have been able to survive until today demonstrate that the location has witnessed anuninterrupted settlement starting from the Hittites Period up to present. It is accepted by alarge portion of the researches that Tuwanuva settlement mentioned in the Hittite cuneiformdocuments of the II nd thousand B.C. is today’s Kemerhisar. The sound resemblance of this namereverberating as Tyana in the late Roman Period with Tuwanuva seems to be the evidence of thefact that the earliest settlement here extended until the II nd thousand B.C. However, due to thefact that we are deprived of the archaeological data related to the pre-Roman Period, it is notpossible for us to comment on the texture of Tyana city in the II nd thousand B.C. as for now.It is observed that there used to be a dense housing on the mound, particularly in thelate ancient age, which is understood from the fact that historical resources have a historystretching out to the II nd thousand B.C. This housing has continued uninterruptedly in theSeljukian, Ottoman and Republic Periods and the settlemenet has become a medium-sized townnowadays. In the settlement which was rather known for its basin providing water for the cityand aqueducts in the late Roman Period, a church, baptistery and additionalstructures dating tothe Christianity Period uncovered as a result of the excavations continuing for 13 years prove thatthe settlement wa an important centre during the Byzantine Period as well. The walls uncoveredin the excavations show that the city was surrounded by fortification walls in the late ancient age.As the Seljuks took over the region, a new city texture was created upon the ols settlement as aresult of the religious and civil housing in the Turkish Period. A great majority of the structuressurviving until today which are still in use also belong to the Turkish period. Due to the past ofthe city, the entire settlement area was registered as the 1st and 3rd degree archaeological site, andwith the approval of the master plan in 2007 for protective purposes, the historical texture of thecity was taken under protection. After the Italian excavations lasting for 13 years in the city, within thescope of the newperiod research, excavation and restoration studies that we started under the presidency of theMuseum and under the scientific consultancy of Assoc. Prof. Osman Doganay, our initial findingsof the housing starting from the late ancient period and lasting until today in Kemerhisar will bebriefly evaluated within the scope of this study. Thus, based on the structures that have been ableto survive until today, it is aimed to present the development of the city starting from the lateancient age until today. Within the scope of the architectural housing in question, the structuresof the Roman Empire water systems (basin, aqueduct and bathhouse) and temples in the city, thechurch and baptistery of the Byzantine Period, the mosque, masjid and hamams of the TurkishPeriod and social structures and local dwellings of the Republic Period and architectural piecesbelonging to them are the primary subjects to be addressed within the scope of our presentation.
