Abstract

Insuyu Cave is located in the west of Taurus Mountains, which is Turkey's most important karst region, and in the Burdur Province. The surface drainage area is about 70 km2 and it receives 731 mm of annual precipitation. The Cave contains many underground lakes different sizes connected to each other. Drainage area, because it is located at the highest position in the region, these lakes can be recharge by only infiltration of rainwater from main components of water balance equation in the drainage basin. At the natural entrance of the cavern, there is a water source with an altitude of 1191.53 meters above sea level. It provides drainage of underground lakes from this elevation, like a natural spillway. On the west side of the cave is Cine Plain, which has an area of 22 km2. The Cine Plain aquifer is the largest reserve of freshwater in the region for the Burdur city. The water pumped from this aquifer supplies significant water for urban use and agricultural irrigation. There is a hydrodynamic interaction between this aquifer and the underground lakes of the cave. The semi-arid period, which began in 1984, has led to a steadily increase in demand for urban use and irrigation water over time. The aquifer's safe yield limit was exceeded in a short time because of the excessive pumping of groundwater irrespective of water balance. Because of excessive pumping continuing in spite of all environmental hazards, firstly the groundwater levels have decreased rapidly and then the Insuyu Cave Source which has a discharge of 50 l/s completely dried up. As a result, underground lakes have lost their natural seasonal fluctuations, and they are almost completely dry in a short time. Since 1986, aquifers and groundwater levels have never returned to normal or average conditions.
