Abstract
During the Hijri centruies of IV/X, under the rule of the Abbasids Caliphate, the administration of the state was dominated by the Buwayhids, and despite the central conflicts they managed to uphold a polyphonic government in which the Shiite - Sunni jurists and theologians had polemics regarding certain subjects. One of these polemics occured between Jaafari sect spokesman Shaykh Mufid and the Hanafi jurist Abu Jafar at-Nasafi. The subject of the debate was whether the feet should be washed or anointed during ablution. The topic is quite significant as it reflects the religious and scientific perceptions of the era. Sheikh Mufid tackles the subject by criticizing the related hadith in order to support the viewpoint of his own sect. Moreover, Sheikh Mufid highlights the importance of reason. Abu Jafar at-Nasafi, on the other hand, centers his interpretation around the hadith itself and defends the standpoint of his sect.
