Abstract

Purpose: Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) was defined as the fear of missing the developments and not being aware of the developments in the social networks. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of FOMO among the first and third grade students of a medical faculty and the related factors.Materials and methods: The universe of this cross-sectional study consisted of 534 students in the 1st and 3rd grades of a medical faculty. It is aimed to reach the whole universe without selecting the sample. A questionnaire which was prepared by surveying the literature and questioning the sociodemographic characteristics and social media usage habits of the participants was applied to the students and FOMO scale was used. Independent Sample T Test, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to comparasion of independent group means and medians. Backward linear regression analysis was performed to determine the factors associated with the FOMO score. Statistical significance level (p) was accepted as <0.05. Ethical committee and required permissions were obtained before the study. Results: The sample consisted of 435 (81.4%) respondents. Sixty percent of the participants were female and 54.5% were third grade. The mean FOMO score was 23.6±6.9. Being in the first grade (B:2,554, 95% CI:1,289-3,818, p<0,001), the frequency of checking the smartphone daily >50 (B:2,818, 95% CI:1,430-4,206, p<0.001), carrying a smartphone charger (B:1.916, 95% CI:0.631-3.201, p=0.004) and more social media accounts (B:0.927, 95% CI:0.566-1.287, p<0.001) were independent risk factors for high FOMO level. Conclusion: FOMO level of participants is low. There is a need to evaluate the level of FOMO in different samples.
