The changing position of pharmacists in Turkey: From the late Ottoman era to the present-day

Özet

Son yıllarda eczacılık mesleğinin içeriği ve sağlık sektöründeki yeri, fark edilir bir değişime uğramıştır. Artık eczacının fonksiyonu ve sağlık sektöründeki yeri, meslek eğitiminin başladığı on dokuzuncu yüzyıldan farklı bir yerdedir. Bunun nedenleri, eczacı kimliğinin evriminin, bu mesleği yapanların sorumluluk ve saygınlığındaki değişimin olumlu yönde olup olmadığı, Osmanlıca meslek dergilerinden de yararlanılarak irdelenmeye çalışılmıştır. Bunun için Osmanlı’dan günümüze mesleğin geçirdiği aşamalar ortaya konulmaya ve evrensel tanımında yer alan fonksiyonları günümüzdekilerle karşılaştırılmaya çalışılmıştır. Buna ek olarak, sağlık hizmetlerinin çok önemli bir bileşeni olan bu mesleğin içinde bulunduğu durum ve eczacıların yaşadıkları zorlukların ortaya konulması da hedeflenmiştir.

Abstract

The position and coverage of pharmaceutical profession has considerably changed recently. Presently, the function of the pharmacist and his/her position in the health system are different from the time when teaching of pharmacy started in Turkey in the 19th century. The present paper aims to examine the evolution in the pharmacist’s identity and how the responsibility and prestige of the pharmacists changed with the time. For this purpose the various phases of the pharmaceutical profession are studied. Furthermore the functions of the pharmacist are compared to those given in the universal definition. The present article also aims to display the current situation of the pharmaceutical profession in Turkey and the difficulties faced by the pharmacists.
