Abstract
This study analyses the determinants of the competitiveness of Turkish manufacturing industries vis-a-vis the 25 top trading partners for the period 2003-2012. Firstly, leading manufacturing industry export product groups are examined in terms of ability to produce goods consistent with foreign market demand and product diversity. Then, for the Turkish manufacturing industry ISIC Rev 3 sub sectors, the effect of price and non-price competition factors on the market shares of low, medium low, medium high and high technology exports in the total exports for 25 countries are analysed by using panel data methods. Our findings show that even though the determinants of the Turkish manufacturing industry's export market share competitiveness vary for different technology levels, price factors are more prominent in enhancing competitive power. However, it is also observed that Turkey is inadequate in adapting to the demand structure of trading partners for acquiring competitive power, and this has adverse effects on Turkey’s market share.
