Abstract
This article attempts to find out general lines of the realism movement based on works of William Faulkner and Ebrahim Golestan in order to determine similar and different aspects of the said movement in works of the authors in question. Classification of important themes in the works of William Faulkner and Ebrahim Golestan will help us to determine the writing styles and social concerns of these two authors. Faulkner and Golestan have special tendencies to express the distress and suffering of their own societies; but different living conditions have led to some differences in the appearance of realism in works and worldview of these two authors. Faulkner, who overtly expresses the ugliness of people in his society, has brought a plain appearance to realism in his works. On the other hand, Golestan, who refrains from running counter to the government of the period due to the official cencorship in the society, express social and political events of his period with a symbolic and implicit way of telling. For this reason, expressing the effects and impression of the distruptions in society through symbols has turned the realism in his works into a realism that is expressed through symbolic forms.
