Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the opinions of the pre-service science teachers about the biomimicry practices in STEM education. The study was carried out with 17 pre-service teachers studying in the third year of science teaching department in faculty of education at a state university during the fall term of 2017 – 2018 academic year. The holistic single case design, one of the case study designs among the qualitative research methods, was used for this study. In the study, “Biomimicry in STEM Education Interview Form” generated by the researcher was implemented as a qualitative data instrument. The qualitative data were analysed by using the content analysis method. As a result of the data analysis, it is concluded that the preservice teachers have positive opinions on biomimicry practices in STEM education and that they think about applying these practices in their own courses. In addition, it can be observed that these practices improve the cognitive and psycho-motor skills of the pre-service teachers. There have been changes in the perspectives of the pre-service teachers on nature and technology. However, it is also seen that the pre-service teachers confuse the engineering design processes and the scientific process skills. Within this context, their effects of the biomimicry practices in STEM education can be examined by applying them in the levels of primary, secondary, high school, and university.
