Abstract
Mucociliary transport is the combined function of the mucus in the nasal mucosa and ciliated epithelial cells. The movement of mucus is towards the nasopharynx. Both cilial function and the composition of mucus can be altered in congenital conditions or in acute illnesses, it is noted that temperature, humidity and altitude levels can also affect mucociliary transport. This study was designed to determine seasonal variations mucociliary transport times in asthmatic patients in remission. The MCTT was determined using the saccharine test. The mucoliary transport time was measured in total of 35 asthmatic patients in remission. The subjects agents ranged from 5 to 16. When mucociliary transport times were analysed according to the time of year, the average was 11m40s in winter, 17m 25s. In spring, 8m10s in summer and 7m 30s in the autumn. In conclusion, although the subjects with bronchial asthma were in remission at the time of the study, The mean mucociliary transport time was found to be at the upper end of the normal range during the spring, when pollen counts are high. While still within the normal range, the mean mucociliary transport was found to be greater during winter, when air pollution is greater and viral respiratory infections are more frequent, than during the summer and autumn.
