Abstract

Geothermal waters containing high concentrations of various elements present potential threat to environment and public health, if naturally or deliberately discharged into the environment. The Akarçay Basin hosts several geothermal fields from which Na~CI type water has been used for threapatical and heating purposes. This water is discharged to the Akarçay Stream in various ways. Evaluation of hydrochemical data obtained from the sites along the Akarçay Stream revealed that particularly the thermal water discharge of 125 I/sec from the Afjet district heating system started to degrade the quality of the stream water. The stream water, which is of Ca-$HCO_3$ type before the discharge, becomes Na-Cl after the discharge. The streambed sediments were found to be in ion exchange equilibrium with polluted stream water.
