The Internet as a Place of Hope: A Micro Study on Generation Z in the Context of Social Events and Claiming Rights

Özet

Kuşak kavramı, yaklaşık olarak aynı yıllarda doğmuş, aynı çağın şartlarını, dolayısıyla birbirine benzer sıkıntıları, kaderleri paylaşmış, benzer ödevlerle yükümlü olmuş kişiler topluluğu anlamına gelmektedir. Her kuşak, içinde yaşadığı toplumsal, ekonomik, siyasi ve teknolojik olaylardan etkilenmektedir. Bu çalışmanın öznesi 2000 ve sonrası doğumlu olan Z kuşağıdır. Z kuşağı, teknolojinin içine doğmuş ve teknolojiyi yoğun şekilde kullanabilen bir kuşaktır. İnternet, Z kuşağı için gündelik yaşamlarının vazgeçilmez bir ögesidir. Z kuşağı interneti sosyalleşme, iletişim, kendini ifade etme gibi eylemler için yoğun şekilde kullanmaktadır. Z kuşağı için internet ve sosyal medya kamusal alan anlamında da önemlidir. Kamusal alan, kamuoyunun oluştuğu, kamu yararı ile ilgili hususların değerlendirildiği ayrıca görüşme, toplanma ve örgütlenme gibi eylemlerin gerçekleştiği alan olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Günümüzde, web 2.0 teknolojileriyle birlikte internet ve sosyal medyanın daha demokratik hale gelmesi ve etkileşimi olanaklı kılması; bu teknolojilerin kamusal alan anlamında değerlendirilmesini sağlamıştır. Bu çalışmada, Z kuşağının toplumsal olaylar ve hak aramada internet ve sosyal medyayı bir umut olarak görüp görmediği değerlendirilmiştir. Görüşme yapılan Z kuşağına mensup katılımcıların düşüncelerine göre; internet ve sosyal medya toplumsal olaylar ve hak aramada önemli bir araç haline gelirken; iktidarları etkileyebilecek düzeyde işlev görmektedir.

Abstract

The concept of generation means a group of people who were born in approximately the same years, shared the conditions of the same age, thus similar troubles and destinies, and were responsible for similar duties. The subject of this study is the Z generation who was born in 2000 and later. Generation Z is a generation born into technology and can use technology intensively. The Internet is an indispensable element of their daily lives for the Z generation. Generation Z uses the internet extensively for activities such as socialization, communication and self-expression. Internet and social media are also important in terms of public sphere for the Z generation. The public sphere can be defined as the area where public opinion is formed, matters related to the public interest are evaluated and actions such as meetings, gatherings and organizations take place. Today, with web 2.0 technologies, internet and social media become more democratic and enable interaction; enabled these technologies to be evaluated in terms of public sphere. In this study, it has been investigated whether the internet and social media are seen as a hope in social events and seeking rights through a micro group belonging to the Z generation. In the study, semi-structured in-depth interview, which is a qualitative research technique, was used. The interviews were conducted online. The participants of the Z generation stated that the internet and social media have become an important tool in social events and seeking rights. In addition, according to the participants, the internet and social media can function at a level that can affect decision makers on social issues.
