Abstract

In this study, the historical adventure of the Kazlıçeşme dervish lodge, foundation, its treasuresand sheikhs are discussed. It is possible to trace back the origin of the Kazlıçeşme Bektashidervish lodge to the founding years of the Ottoman Empire, or to the conquest of Istanbul.According to legend, the dervish lodge was established by Eryek (Erikli) Baba, a sufi ofKhorasan. However, records that illustrate the history of the dervish lodge do not go furtherthan the second half of the eighteenth century. According to these records, the dervish lodgewas built by Şem î Ebubekir Aga, and both Şütürşumar Mehmed Baba and Hüseyin baba servedas sheikhs. In 1826, as a result of the ban on Bektashi and the Janissary corps, the Kazlıçeşmedervish lodge was demolished, and a long time passed before it was rebuilt and becomeoperational once more. The dervish lodge, was probably reestablished due to the efforts ofPerişan Mehmed Ali Baba, probably at the end of Sultan Abdülmecid s reign or at the beginningof the reign of Abdulaziz. Up until 1925 and the abolition of dervish lodges and shrines theKazlıçeşme dervish lodge continued to operate. Today it is restored and given vback to thepublic and it has become an important religious center.
