Abstract

As the Soviet Union entered the process of deformation, nationalism and discrimination intensified; bloody struggles took place in many regions. Not only non-Russian ethnic and national groups, but also the Russians who constitute the dominant layer of society, have come face to face with such negative feelings as nationalism, discrimination, othering, and even enmity towards foreigners. It is interesting to notice increase in these feelings. However, in Russia, where people have experienced various social and economic problems and where there is many layered federal structure, the political discourse and the activities should stress multi-national life and common values. There are various political reasons behind the fact that extreme nationalist groups, which experienced falls and rises in the last twenty five years, and new Nazi and Fascist organisations have found an appropriate ground for their activities among the Russian society.
