Abstract

This article is to analyze the third campaign of Nadir Shah to Daghestan namely the impulsive causes of this campaign, the main battles in the course of it, and the essential reasons that allegedly led to the failure of the Daghestan campaign. Considering the problem in the context of empire-building made it possible to conclude that Daghestan was of great interest to Nadir Shah as Daghestan has a fairly high geopolitical, military and strategic importance both for the lasting conquest of the entire South Caucasus (and in the long run – the North Caucasus), and withstanding against the Ottoman and Russian Empires. Thus, the well-known opinions in historiography, explaining Nadir Shah’s desire to conquer Daghestan mostly as his subjective craving (largely irrational) have been refuted. As for Nadir Shah’s impulsive causes for invading Mountainous Daghestan, the conclusion we reached is that the reason was as Nadir believed that without possession of the mountainous part, it was impossible to control the entire Daghestan. On the other hand, even if Nadir would be content with the flat part and did not seek the mountains, he would still have to deal with mountainous Daghestan, since it was, for natural reasons, the refuge for all the discontented of the region. Nadir’s desire to end the peculiar political existence of Daghestan, violent actions taken in achieving his tasks, only stirred up the discontent of the local population, which ultimately led to the collapse of the Daghestan campaign.
