Abstract

Reinforced concrete columns are repaired or strengthened by jacketing. A new reinforced concrete layer surrounding the existing column is introduced in this method. Full jacket (four sides) is not always possible due to space limitations. One, two or three sided partial jackets are applied to the edge and corner columns of buildings surrounded by close neighbours. The seismic performance of partially jacketed (two adjacent sides) columns have been investigated by testing large scale columns subjected to bending moment reversals with double curvature. The more realistic case of combined axial load (smaller than the balanced load) and reversed cyclic bending was not included in the test programme, since it is known to be less critical than the case of bending reversals without any axial load. The present paper reports the results of this study with reference to the seismic performance of columns with full jacket studied earlier.
