Abstract
Snow is an important resource in terms of water resources in Turkey, but there is not much investigation in monitoring the snow covered areas. Especially in the east part of Turkey, snow is the main source for the spring-runoff. Traditionally, except in some areas of the world, the existing methods for snow-cover monitoring are based on ground collection at local level, which is not well-suited for detection of significant areal snow cover variation. In this respect remote sensing techniques provide a potentially efficient tool to measure the snow over large areas. Satellites observing in the visible and infrared parts of the spectral region are not able to penetrate clouds, so snow monitoring by them requires at least locally clear skies or application of some algorithms to separate snow from cloud for partial cloudy skies. In this study, snow covered areas for 1992 are monitored by using passive microwave data obtained from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I -Fll) satellite system. The results obtained from satellite data are compared with the ground observations in order to show the use of passive microwave data for monitoring of snow cover over Turkey. The effective parameters in the distribution of snow are also mentioned in this study.
