Abstract
In Turkey, especially in the Eastern Black Sea region, many of the roof collapses or damages occur because of heavy snowfall exceeding the maximum depth for design. Roof snow loads specified for structural design in modern standards are calculated as the product of a design ground snow load and conversion factors. The aim of this study is to construct a map to present the variation of the ground snow loads in Eastern Black Sea region precisely and, to discuss the approaches in Turkish standards of TS 498 and TS 7046. For the purpose, 50-year ground snow loads for 32 meteorology stations in the Eastern Black Sea region and adjacent cities were determined by statistical analysis using the snow data obtained from the stations. Using these loads, ground snow load map of the region was constructed by spatial interpolation method. It is concluded that ground snow loads suggested by TS_498 are not safe, and TS 7046 that suggest statistical analysis only to evaluate ground snow loads is not appropriate for some cases.
