Özet

Özet 19. yüzyılda Osmanlı iktisadında gayrimüslim tebaanın önemi malumdur. İzmir şehri de ticari hayatın en yoğun olduğu yerlerin başında gelmektedir. İzmirde yaşayan Ermeni Balyozzade ailesi de kent ticaretinde mühim bir yere sahiptir. Ancak aile hakkında bilinenler çok azdır. Balyozzade ailesi, İzmire muhtemelen 19.yy.da gelmiş, kısa sürede şehrin önemli tüccarları arasında yerlerini almışlardır. Tarım, sanayi ve ticaret alanlarında çeşitli yatırımlar yapmışlardır. Hamidiye Vapur Şirketinin kurucularından olan aile üyeleri, uzun süre şirketin yönetiminde bulunmuşlardır. Ailenin ekonomik faaliyetleri sadece İzmir ile sınırlı kalmamıştır. Manisada da özellikle tarım alanında girişimleri olmuştur. Balyozzadeler, İzmir ticari organizasyonunda etkin olmuşlardır. İzmir Ticaret odasının kuruluşunda görev almışlar, uzun yıllar odanın yönetiminde bulunmuşlardır. Ayrıca ailenin kent yönetiminde de etkili olduğu görülür. Vilayet idare meclisi ve belediye meclisinde üyelik yapmışlardır. Balyozzade ailesi, Ermeni terör hareketlerinden son derece olumsuz etkilenmişlerdir. Ailenin bir üyesi Ermeni teröristler tarafından öldürülmüştür. Bir başka üyesi ise teröristlere yardım ederken yakalanmıştır. Büyük ihtimalle 1915 tehcirine tabi tutulmamışlarsa da Cumhuriyet döneminde Türkiyede bulunmadıkları kesindir.

Abstract

The Fate of an Ottoman Armenian Family; Balyozzades In the 19th century the importance of the non-Muslim community of the Ottoman economy is well known. The city of Izmir was one of the places where existed an intense commercial life. The Armenian Balyozzade family living in Izmir had an important place in the city of commerce. But there is not much information about this family. Balyozade family had probably come to Izmir in the 19th century and became one of the leading traders in the city. They made some investments in agriculture, industry and commerce. Balyozade family members were among the founders of the Hamidiye Ferry and served as the directors of the company for a long time. The family s activities were not limited to Izmir. They had some investments in other cities as well, i. e. in agriculture in Manisa. Balyozzades were effective at commercial organizations in Izmir. They took part in the foundation of Izmir Chamber of Commerce. For many years, they were in the management of the Chamber. The family was also city management. They were among the members of the Provincial Council and the Municipal Council. Balyozzade family was affected extremely negatively by the Armenian terrorist movement. A member of the family was killed by the Armenian terrorists. Another member was arrested while helping the terrorists. They probably
