Abstract

Solar driven refrigeration systems are evaluated as the systems that they can substitute with a considerable part of refrigeration systems driven electrical units, or can be alternative. The advantages of solar driven refrigeration systems, as the main topics, concern the reduction of peak loads for electricity utilities, the use of zero ozone depletion impact refrigerants, the decreased primary energy consumption and decreased global warming impact. The theme of this study is to focus usage possibility of ejector-absorption cooling system (EACS) in our country. In this study, it is investigate that whether or not the required heat for generator in an EACS can be using in our country is supply from solar energy. There are two important reasons for the utilization of EACSs in our country. One of them is that the production and use of CFCs and HFCs will be phased out in a few years according to Montreal Protocol, adopted in 1987. The other is that our country has high solar energy potential because of its location in the northern hemisphere with latitudes 36-42°N and longitudes 26-45°E and the yearly average solar radiation is 3,6 kW-h/m2-day, and the total yearly radiation period is -2610 h. In this study, 12 cities are selected in different regions of our country and the analyses are performed using radiation data and sunshine duration information having been collected since 2000. By using the meteorological data, in the conditions of maximum coefficient of performance (COPmax), required optimum collector surface area for an EACS in which aqua-ammonia fluid couple is used, and required minimum energy for auxiliary heater proving that the system can be used throughout the year, are calculated. For the selected cities, it was seen that the heat gain factor (HGF) varies in the range from 2,47 to 2,91 for all the seasons. The maximum HGF of about 2,91 was obtained for Kuşadası in June. This study shows that our country has a great potential to use solar energy for domestic heating/cooling applications.
