Abstract

Objective: Family physicians who provide outpatient preventive and therapeutic health services in primary care have a special place in terms of elder neglect and/or abuse. In this study, it was aimed to determine the awareness of family physicians providing primary care services about elder neglect and/or abuse, and the data were collected by the researchers through an online data collection form. Results: The findings of the study are presented in three categories: general opinions of physicians suggesting neglect and abuse, physical conditions, social conditions, approaches physicians follow when they think about neglect and/or abuse, and practices that they make. Situations suggesting neglect and/ or abuse have been presented to physicians, and for none of the listed categories, the situation of neglect and abuse has not been considered by all of the physicians. However, when there are physical symptoms, they concider neglect and abuse more than social symptoms. That may be due to the relative ease of noticing the symptoms, which are more tangible during the practice of medicine. Conclusion: According to the results of the research the level of knowledge and awareness of physicians does not always translate or reflect into the desired behaviors. These shortcomings are observed in the application areas available to them. For the physicians to make the right practices about elder neglect and abuse, it is appropriate to provide behavioral-based training opportunities as well as to develop awareness situations.
