Abstract

Known by the combination of inconsistent authoritarianism and overprotection, helicopter parenting style is an child-rearing approach characterised by the behaviours of controlling the children, not granting them autonomy or limiting it, forcing them to perform activities which they really do not like, having them take lesson on different subjects or depriving them of socialisation with others, holding their academic results important and prioritised before everything; the tendency to think that their children are right in everything they do; and complaining about teachers and school councils at every level from preschool to university regardless of child’s age. This research aimed to investigate the prevalence of helicopter parenting from the aspects of both parents. According to this general purpose, it was intended to determine on which subjects the helicopter parenting attitudes were more dominant by demographics such as age, gender, educational level, and characteristics of the place of residence. Descriptive survey method was used in the research. To this end, the Perceived Helicopter Parenting Scale was applied to 1600 individuals whose ages varied between 11 and 22 years and who were studying in the levels ranging from secondary school to postgraduate education. The data of 666 participants who perceived the attitudes of their parents as being helicopter were subjected to analyses with the methods of descriptive statistics, variance analysis, t-test and Scheffe test. It was observed in the research that one-third of the mothers and one-seven of the fathers in Turkey had helicopter parenting attitude and the mothers were exhibiting more helicopter attitudes than the fathers. Helicopter parenting attitudes perceived by the secondary school students were found to be higher than the attitudes perceived by other educational levels. While helicopter attitude was observed more among the parents with one child and living in metropolitans, helicopter parenting attitude was not affected by children’s gender.
