Abstract

The most frequently used types of translation in audiovisual translation in Turkey and many other countries are subtitling and dubbing. Over time, depending on ideological and practical reasons, some trends have developed in certain countries and settings with regard to which translation type is to be preferred. The translation of audiovisual texts, which has become an important topic in the field of Translation Studies, especially in the 21st century, has become an area of interest for researchers. This paper examines Intouchables (Turkish: Can Dostum), a French-made film, making an impression around the world and containing comedy elements, by taking the Turkish subtitled and dubbed version as the target text. This review, is made with a focus on the norms in translation of Gideon Toury, a translation scholar. In this film, the language levels, the forms of address, the use of slang, and especially the expressions containing profanity play an important role. This is why the translation of these elements is examined. It is examined whether translator strategies show a certain tendency in two different types of translation, even in the context of a limited corpus of data.
