Abstract
Abstract: The social welfare effect of government intervention over complementary and substitutionary goods market is theoretically analyzed. In the analysis working of two different markets, substiutionary and complementary goods markets are compared with respect to perfect competition and semi state controlled interventionist structures inherent to them. In comparison the total social welfare in both markets is taken as a fundamental criterion. It has been assumed in the analysis that the government participates in the manufacturing of a product directly or intervenes in the markets by influencing the amount and the price of the product manufactured. It is realized that it is possible for the government to influence the overall social welfare in a positive way by developing policies including these kinds of interventions in the markets. As a result of the analysis, it is argued that the government intervention could be applicable towards increasing social welfare. Keywords: Social Welfare, Consumer Surplus, Producer Surplus, Substitutionarity, Complementarity.
