Abstract
Abstract: The Erciş city, the subject of this research, is situated in the Van District of the Eastern Anatolia Region. The city itself is situated over a large delta where Zilan Stream flows into the Lake Van.Erciş was founded by the Urartus who ruled in the area between 900 and 600 B.C. Since then it was invaded, changed rulers and was also destroyed several times. In addition to this man-caused destruction the periodically rising water level of the lake, has also threatened the city and eventually the land around the castle of Erciş turned into and isle, the settlers of which consequently had to leave to settle quite inland where they lived in the villages of Çelebibağı, Kasımbağı and Pulur. The city center was then shifted to Akans, which is quite about 3 km. from the coast in the eastern part of the Erciş plain. Currently, the ever rising of the water level of the Lake Van keeps threatening the southern margins of the city. In this research, the effect of the Lake Van level rising on the city has been investigated and proposals of several solutions so as to mention problems encountered have been made.
