Abstract
The Black Sea region represents an important crossroads between Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East. By hosting three NATO member states and NATO partner countries, the Black Sea is a battleground for the regional dominance of several powers, namely Russia, the U.S., Turkey and the EU. The attention for the region was intensified amid the 2014 annexation of Crimea, thus paving a way for Russia to increase its military presence in the Black Sea – which posed a direct threat to NATO members. Within the framework of the regionalism, this paper seeks to explain the region’s complexity from both the EU and the U.S. standpoint, placing a special emphasis on the security aspect of the regional cooperation and covering the Black Sea Synergy of the EU, Wider Black Sea Region of U.S. and NATO’s related policies.
