Abstract
Aim: Neopterin is a sensitive marker for cell-mediated immune response. Because of this, the neopterin levels of body fluids show cell-mediated immune response in different infectious diseases which involve T cells and macrophages. In this study, the diagnostic value of serum neopterin levels were investigated pre-treatment and the middle of treatment of patients with brucellosis. The aim of this study was to determine the neopterin levels in patients with brucellosis before and in the middle of the treatment and compare with the levels of healthy subjects. Material And Methods: Twenty patient with brucellosis (16 of acute brucellosis cases and 4 of chronic brucellosis cases ) and 20 healthy adult individuals were included the study. Neopterin concentrations were measured by ELISA method according to the protocol of manufacturer . Results: Mean neopterin levels were 46.15± 27.99 nmol/ nmol/L in patients with brucellosis and 3.38±2.89 nmol/L in healthy subjects before treatment, respectively. The serum neopterin levels were found to be statistically signifi cantly higher in patients with brucellosis than the control group. Conclusion: Serum neopterin levels can be used as a helper laboratory finding for the diagnosis and follow up of the patients with brucellosis. Further studies about neopterin levels in acute and chronic brucellosis are needed.
